In the cities

  • Walking: the best option if your hotel is close. Use an umbrella, and expect crowds at prayer times. Hotels by walking time.
  • Careem / Uber: the most reliable way to get around, with transparent prices
  • Taxis: plentiful near the Haram; agree the fare before you get in
  • Hotel shuttles: many hotels further out run buses to the Haram

Arrival airports

King Abdulaziz International (JED), Jeddah

The main airport for Umrah. About 80 km from Makkah (around an hour). The Haramain train runs from the airport station; taxis and ride-hailing cost roughly 150–200 SAR. Remember ihram before landing.

Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz (MED), Madinah

About 15–20 km from the Prophet's Mosque. Smaller and easier, and a good choice if you start in Madinah.

King Khalid International (RUH), Riyadh

Useful on a tourist visa if you're touring the country. Otherwise it's about 850 km from Makkah, so connect by domestic flight.
