The restrictions start when you make the intention at the miqat, not when you put on the garments, and end with halq or taqsir.
Not allowed
- Perfume, or scented soap, shampoo or cream
- Cutting or removing hair or nails
- Men: stitched, fitted clothing; covering the head
- Women: niqab or other face covering; gloves
- Marital relations, and conduct leading to them
- Proposing or contracting a marriage
- Hunting land animals
- Arguing and foul language
Allowed
- Showering with unscented soap
- Changing into a clean set of ihram garments
- An umbrella, or shade from a bus roof
- Watch, glasses, ring, belt or money pouch
- Unscented sunscreen and lip balm
- Gentle scratching, even if a hair falls by accident
- Medication, plasters and bandages
- Women: normal modest clothes, socks and shoes
If you break a rule
Scholars distinguish between mistakes and deliberate acts:
- Forgetfulness, ignorance or force: most scholars hold there is no penalty. Stop as soon as you realise, and seek forgiveness.
- Deliberate (such as wearing perfume or cutting hair): a fidyah is due. That is a choice of fasting three days, feeding six poor people, or sacrificing a sheep.
- Marital relations before completing Umrah: this invalidates the Umrah, and requires a sacrifice and a replacement Umrah.
